Subject: Euthanasia

Question
QUESTION: Why do vets sometimes have to attempt 2-3 times to euthanize a dog? I just put down my beloved golden today.. and they had to try 3 different areas of the body to euthanize him. They tryed the amount for 200 lbs animal .. my dog is only 90 lbs. I am just wondering why it didnt work normally? The vet said they had never seen this before?
Thanks Laura

ANSWER: Laura -

I am sorry that you have to have your pet put to sleep.  I am assuming that your pet was very sick - and that is the very reason that it may have been difficult for him to pass away peacefully with the normal dosage of medicine.  The medicine that is usually used to euthanize an animal is a thick liquid barbituate.  If the animal does not have adequate circulation, then it may take longer than usual for him to feel the effects of the medication.

QUESTION: Hey, Thanks for replying!!! I called the vet i went too and havent heard anything. It was a horrible experience. He didnt know what was happening.. but could i ask another quick question. We really didnt know what was wrong with him..the reason we had to put him down was because he couldnt get  up anymore.. so it is hard to really know what was wrong with him.. other than kidney failure and issues with his back. Do you know of anything specefic things that could have been the issue? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I just cant stop thinking of how it all went down!

Answer
Laura -

There are probably thousands of diseases that can cause an animal to get weak and become recumbent.  How extensive were your diagnostics? I would love to be able to give you answers that would help you to determine why your baby passed away, but I am unable to do so without examining your dog and reviewing his medical record.  Talk with your veterinarian; I am sure he/she can give you insight on what happened to your pet.

Best Regards,
