Davanagere

Davanagere, also known as Davangere, (ದಾವಐಗೆರೆ in Kannada) is one of the major cities in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the administrative headquarters of Davanagere District. Previously known for its cotton mills, it is fast developing into one of the major cities of Karnataka.

Davanagere was famous for textiles. It is also famous for its educational institutes. It has two medical colleges, three engineering colleges and a number of other colleges offering courses in arts, commerce and science. The student population is made up of the people from different cities and states in India. There are a limited number of foreign students studying at Davanagere. Davanagere has Chigeteri Mills.

Events

A major attraction of Davanagere is the "Durgambika Devi (the grama devi or local deity)" jatre (fest) that is conducted once in 2 years in the month of march/april.The celebrations continue for more than 10 days.

There is one more thing that Davangere is famous for: ChikunGunya. The disease as on July 21 has spread among a lakh people. The district administration has done a wonderful job in preventing the spreading to only a lakh people. There is "lack" of infrastructure in terms of beds in hospitals, and doctors. Patients are forced to sleep below trees with drips hanging from the branches of trees. What superb use of nature?. The doctors in the hospitals hardly care for the patients and the relatives of the patients have to run behind the doctors to get them to look at their dear ones. The disease is extremely painful and the patient is rendered crippled atleast for five days. What a boon to the patient if he doesnt have any well wishers to look after him.

Food

Davangere is also famous for its special eatables, "benne dosa" and "mandakki, menasina-kai" that attract various people from all around the state of Karnataka.

Education

Davangere is being called the Oxford of Karnataka, since almost all major courses are offered here. Davangere has 3 reputed engineering colleges,2 dental colleges and a medical college. It also has good business schools, arts college and many more educational facilities.
